Billerica is the kind of town that rewards a second look. It has a deeper history than most suburbs, growing up around the Middlesex Canal, and it offers one of the more direct commuter rail rides to Boston in the region. Toss in strong schools and plenty of lakes and parks, and renters who find it tend to stay.
What is the history?
Incorporated in 1655 and named for Billericay, England, Billerica grew around the Middlesex Canal, one of America's earliest major waterways. The Middlesex Canal Museum keeps that story alive, and Revolutionary-era landmarks sit alongside modern neighborhood streets in a way that gives the town a real sense of depth.
How does the commute work?
North Billerica Station on the Lowell Line reaches Boston's North Station in about 40-50 minutes, and the rebuilt station complex opened in 2019. Driving to Boston is roughly 18 miles, about 35-45 minutes at peak, with Routes 3, 93, 495 and 95 all within reach.
What about the schools?
Billerica Public Schools run one high school, two middle schools and five elementary schools, anchored by the new Billerica Memorial High School building that opened in 2019. The Shawsheen Valley Regional Technical High School adds a regional career-training option for students who want it.
Where do renters get outdoors?
Vietnam Veterans Park is the centerpiece, with ponds, a canoe ramp, a fishing pier, a dog park and open fields. Great Brook Farm State Park, a working dairy farm with miles of trails, and Manning State Park are both just over the line, giving Billerica renters serious outdoor room without a long drive.
